SAMPLE FAQS

FAQ

What is the maximum length and width of the mesh?

+-

Maximum length and width are highly dependent on the pattern and whether a weave is rigid or flexible. In the case of flexible meshes, maximum width can span up to 26 feet. Typical length is approximately 100 feet though longer lengths are possible and should be discussed with your sales representative. Rigid or PC meshes tend to have a maximum width of 101 inches. Please visit our Product Gallery where you can click on each product to find the unique specifications for each product.

What are your color coating capabilities?

+-

GKD offers designers and specifiers an unlimited array of color coating options when designing with metal fabric. Powder coating, specialty painting and also screen printing are used for adding color to stainless steel wire mesh, resulting in colorful fabric options that are also resistant to extreme heat, cold, bending and flexing. Learn more about our secondary finishes.

Do you do custom weaves and if so, what is the minimum order?

+-

GKD offers a standard collection of more than 50 distinct weave patterns that vary in material, transparency, visual appearance and mechanical properties. However, we often develop custom patterns to meet unique design objectives and specific installation requirements. With weaving capabilities at our facilities here in the US and in Germany, we apply our 95 years of weaving experience to provide architects and designers with the weave that will accurately and safely meet their aesthetic and technical needs. Depending on the customization requested, the lead time may vary. Because of the range of variables that can be customized, contact our sales department to determine an overall timeline.

What is the general lead time for an order?

+-

Lead time is dependent on the scope of the order. While many orders are shipped in a week or less, larger, more complex projects can naturally have a longer timeline. For projects large in scope or complexity, the timeline is agreed upon with the customer and we strive to ensure that we meet delivery milestones. Our on-time rate, which is one of our key quality metrics, is approximately 95% for all our products.

How long does it take to get a custom sample?

+-

Depending on the customization requested, whether that is a unique weave pattern, alloy, coating, finish or other assembly, the lead time may vary. Because of the range of variables that can be customized, contact our sales department to determine an overall timeline.

Where is your material made?

+-

We manufacture on four continents, with primary metal fabric manufacturing conducted here in the United States at our facility in Cambridge, MD and in Duren Germany.

What is your material made of?

GKD’s high-quality woven metal fabrics and innovative attachment systems are crafted of non-corroding high-grade AISI Type 316 stainless steel. In addition to stainless steel, other materials, such as copper, bronze, aluminum are available to achieve desired function and aesthetics and may require maintenance protocols specific to those materials.

Do you produce from any other alloys and if so which?

+-

In addition to stainless steel, other materials such as copper, bronze and aluminum are available to achieve desired function and aesthetics and may require maintenance protocols specific to those materials. Please visit our Product Gallery where you can click on each product to find the available alloys for each product.

What is the transparency of the material?

+-

Transparency is highly dependent on the weave pattern and ranges anywhere from 1% to 83%. Please visit our Product Gallery where you can click on each product to find the unique specifications for each product.

Does the material meet or help LEED qualifications?

+-

Using GKD metal fabrics can contribute to LEED points under the Energy and Atmosphere, Material and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation and Design and Site Selection categories. GKD’s line of stainless steel metal fabrics underscores the company’s environmental commitment:

  • The stainless steel used in GKD metal fabrics contains greater than 60% post-industrial and post-consumer content recycled material.
  • During manufacturing, 100% of the scrap metal material is recycled.
  • Because the mesh is constructed of stainless steel or other non-degrading alloys, there is no timeframe for removal or replacement except in the case of remodeling, renovation or changing customer needs. However, if the material is removed, GKD metal fabric is 100% recyclable.

Does your material meet fall protection?

+-

GKD metal fabrics are an ideal solution for safety and security. For railing or balustrade infill for fall protection, they provide security while retaining a light and graceful presence. The material’s flexibility also facilitates its use on more complex, organic designs.

How are panels attached to the building?

+-

Our role as the pioneer of the metal fabric category means that while we have developed a broad range of weave patterns, we have also pioneered a series of attachment methods that ensure optimal results and above all, safety. Please visit our Attachment Gallery where you can learn about the various attachment methods available.

Do you offer custom fabrication?

+-

Our range of custom capability includes custom weaves, secondary finishes and even custom methods of fabrication. With a full production shop located in our facility in Cambridge, MD, we can work with you to determine the unique fabrication requirement for your project. To discuss your custom fabrication needs, contact our sales department.

Who is my local representative?

+-

Our rep network extends throughout the United States and Canada. Please contact us to discuss your project and we will be happy to connect you with a rep in your area.

What loads does you material exert against the building?

+-

This varies due to several factors including building location, mesh type, and code requirements. Feel free to reach to the GKD Sales and Engineering team to determine the maximum loads that will be placed on your building.

What is the price per square foot?

+-

Cost will vary from product to product and project to project. Please contact our sales department to receive a quote for your project.

Can metal fabric be woven in different textures and finishes?

+-

Yes. We offer a broad collection of more than 50 weaves that vary in alloy, transparency, texture and aesthetic. Custom weaving is also available depending on the quantity of your order. Please visit our product gallery to browse our full collection.

Does metal fabric help with heat gain or loss on a building?

+-

GKD metal fabrics offer excellent solar radiation properties. They combine good to excellent solar protection characteristics while allowing uninhibited views to the outside – particularly when the sun is high in the sky. When it is low in the sky during winter, solar heat gains can be achieved, depending on the type of glazing used. To learn more about solar protection using a metal fabric façade, download “Solar Protection with Metal Mesh”.

How will your product impact my mechanical HVAC systems?

+-

Metal mesh can be used as a sunshade to reduce the amount of solar heat gain passing through any fenestrations to the building, therefore reducing the required cooling loads for the HVAC system which also impacts energy savings and operating cost.

What is the expected lifespan of metal fabric?

+-

Because the mesh is constructed of stainless steel, or other non-degrading alloys, the material does not have a projected life span or timeframe for removal or replacement. The primary reasons for removal are due to remodeling, changes in the installation or customer needs.

Does your product require maintenance?

+-

GKD’s high-quality woven metal fabrics and innovative attachment systems are crafted of non-corroding high-grade AISI Type 316 stainless steel that is heat, fire and impact resistant and suitable for all climates and environments. Regardless of the application, clients can trust GKD metal fabric to retain its beauty for decades with minimal maintenance. In fact, many interior applications only require dusting and a light cleaning. Exterior projects may call for a periodic pressure washing.

Can metal fabric provide impact resistance for storm and hurricane protection?

+-

Yes, the metal fabric can be incorporated into an engineered storm/security system.

What are the acoustical benefits of metal fabric?

+-

To meet the high acoustical requirements of concert halls, theaters and other public spaces where sound control is critical, designers often choose architectural mesh from GKD for a variety of applications including ceilings, wall covering, railings and balustrades. To learn more about the role of metal fabrics in acoustics, visit our Acoustics applications page.

What is the solar heat coefficient of this product?

+-

This varies from product to product due to the incidence angle of the sun, the material’s thickness, weave shape and open area. It can be as low as .11 and as high as .45 (on a scale of 0.0 to 1.0 with the lower number indicating better shading properties).
